Race Review SCORE CARD

PRE RACE.

Entry and information:

Entry via Howei was very straight forward although the event information was rather limited and the promised updates regarding the course, medal & T-shirt design were announced on Facebook but not on the Howei page.

Telephone contact details were given. Facebook was the only real contact point and questions were answered and information was updated. The Howei web-site was never updated.

Value of entry price at RM55 was reasonable.

Race registration and kit collection:

Collection point was local to the event and the dates, one week ahead of the event, should not have been a problem as a postal service was offered, so, those that did not wish to collect had the option to have their kit delivered for a small cost.

I cannot comment on the ease of collection as I chose to have my kit delivered. 14/20

Race site Facilities:

Space at the venue was very limited, pre-race warming runs had to be done on crowded, due to the lack of parking, fairly busy roads.

Toilets were provided and the number seemed to be adequate, however they were unlit which always proves to be a problem for those without a phone/torch.

Water was not available pre-race

Staffing numbers at the start were good and the MC kept everyone informed.

Parking:

Street parking was the only option with the area around the start point being very congested, I still cannot understand why people cannot park sensibly a little further from the start and use the distance as a warm up/cool down jog.

Care of Competitors:

The warm up was enthusiastic and high tempo for those who were able to squeeze into the small area available.

Starting time was spot on but with the standard non-control of the starting chute, there was one participant who arrived quite late to the start and entered the chute from the front, pushing his way past one of the start marshals. I am not exaggerating when I say he was walking after no more than two-hundred meters because he was being pushed along too fast by those behind him.

Medical facilities, in the way of two St. John’s crews, were in place at the start/finish but were not evident on the course. 17/25

RACE.

Organisation:

Course management:

Traffic control was well managed at junctions but the whole race was run on unclosed roads, a very dangerous undertaking, especially with so many novice runners attending, thankfully the roads were not too busy, even so I witnessed cars crossing through lines of tired runners. I was forced to take avoiding action when a car turned into the road we were running on with little or no regard for us runners. I did not hear of any accidents but what might have been?

Road runs should be, at the very least, run on coned-off sections of road but ideally on closed roads.

For the most part there was sufficient running space and all changes of direction were well marshalled. The course was relatively flat and had a quite a high enjoyment factor for a city course.

Marshalling quantity and quality was good and the feed stations were ample, well-staffed and stocked as I passed. I did not hear of anyone complaining that water or isotonic had been in short supply.

Finish line goodie-bag and medal collection was well organised. Food, isotonic drink, Milo and water were all available just beyond the finish line. 18/30

POST RACE.

Choice of food was limited to just water melon but there was plenty of drinks available.

Resting areas, other than the free leg massage tent, provided by MyPhysio Works of Klang, were non-existent. Thankfully the medical facilities were available but largely unused.

The cool down area was the same, but now busier, road as the warm-up area.

Top placings were not announced, finding any information on the finish was not easy but once found was limited to a list of bib numbers, no names, no times. Very disappointing.

I am afraid I did not wait for the prize ceremony as it was an hour from when I finished and with no timing it seemed pointless, unless you were hoping for something from the prize draw. 11/20

AFTER EVENT

Possibly the most disappointing element of the event, questions on the Facebook page were no longer being answered, there has been no communication on the page and no results have been published. 0/5

My overall score for this event is 60% this was not a bad event but it seemed to miss the mark in most things. Minor improvements in planning, road safety, timing and communication would greatly improve this event.

Happy Running

When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

My personal race.

My race was intended to be a steady, even paced, pre marathon event. In reality my pace was a little erratic in places, more of a surge and rest affair.

My finishing time of 0:50:12 was close to what I had aimed for but not achieved in the manner I would have liked.

With absolutely no times being recorded it is impossible to judge how I compared to others who took part, all I know is I did not finish in the top ten, no surprise there then.

Apart from the traffic situation I really enjoyed the run.

Congratulations to our Champions whoever you may be.
